Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence training system called Colossus, which claims to be the world’s most powerful, a wallet linked to the $235 million WazirX hack has just moved over $6 million in Ether to Tornado Cash, and Brazil’s Supreme Court has upheld a judge’s recent decision to suspend the X social media platform in the country.
Elon Musk’s xAI Colossus goes online — and it really is colossal
It’s no secret that the race is on to create the most powerful artificial intelligence models, and over the weekend, billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, surged into the lead.
On Sept. 2, Musk posted that his team at xAI — his AI development and research company — has brought its Colossus 100,000 H100 training cluster online.
Musk said it took his team 122 days to complete the process of bringing Colossus online, and over the next couple of months, it will double in size, bringing it to 200,000.
Colossus is now touted to be the most powerful AI training system available. This number is based on the number of graphics processing units (GPUs) powering the model.
One X user pointed out the actual scale of this development, surpassing every major model released to date. By comparison, OpenAI’s most powerful model uses 80,000 GPUs.
By comparison, the H200 is equipped with 141 gigabytes of HBM3E memory and 4.8 terabytes per second of bandwidth. Blackwell’s top-end capacity is 36.2% higher than the H200 and 66.7% higher in total bandwidth.
Nvidia responded to the unveiling of Colossus by posting congratulations to Musk and the xAI team. It also highlighted that it will be the most powerful and have “exceptional gains” in energy efficiency.
WazirX hacker moves $6 million in crypto to Tornado Cash
A wallet address linked to the $235 million hack of Indian crypto exchange WazirX has moved $6.5 million worth of ill-gotten funds through the sanctioned crypto mixer Tornado Cash.
In a Sept. 3 post to X, blockchain security platform Cyvers shared that the hacker had transferred a total of 2,600 Ether
ETH $2,444 — worth $6.5 million at current prices — to Tornado Cash in a bid to launder the stolen funds.
Beginning Sept. 2, the wallet address held a total of $6.7 million but now holds just $154,000, after the hacker made 26 separate transfers of 100 ETH to Tornado Cash in just one hour, according to data from crypto tracking platform DeBank.
It comes as WazirX announced that it had begun allowing users to withdraw up to 66% of their Indian Rupee (INR) token balances from the exchange, nearly one week before the withdrawal window was scheduled to be open.
Brazil’s Supreme Court upholds X suspension
A Brazilian Supreme Court panel has upheld a recent decision to suspend access to X in the country.
In a unanimous decision, five Supreme Court Justices supported Justice Alexandre de Moraes’ Aug. 30 ruling to suspend the social media platform. Moraes’ decision was handed down after X CEO Musk refused to name a legal representative for the company’s Brazilian operations.
According to an Associated Press report, Moraes followed through with his intention to suspend the platform after X’s Global Government Affairs team said it “would not comply with [de Moraes’] illegal orders to censor political opponents.”
Musk has doubled down on his criticism of Brazil’s justice system, calling Moraes “evil” and a “dictator.” Musk has also said that VPN usage would likely surge as more Brazilians sought to bypass the suspension. However, Brazilians caught using a VPN to access X could face fines of up to 50,000 reais, or $8,900.
According to Moraes, X will remain suspended until the company pays outstanding fines of more than $3 million.
